The 2nd hole at Powfoot is a long par 5 with out of bounds down the right hand side. Scott hit his drive down the middle and then proceeded to tug his second left into the gorse. After searching about it was found sitting proudly about 3 feet off the ground.

He had hit 2 long shots to be only 50 yards short of the green at this point.

"I can hit the green from here " he announced casually.

After a few closer looks, practise swings and also pricking his rear end in numerous places from the gorse he decided against the heroics.

Taking a penalty shot he dropped his ball and took his medicine.

A nice pitch on left him with a 10 footer for par which just lipped out. The result was a bogey.

Would he have done better hitting the ball off it's perch in the gorse.

I don't think so.

Sometimes we all think we are better than we are and think we can hit great recovery shots. Yes we all can but it's maybe 1 in 30 attempts depending on our skill. We are all guilty of digging ourselves into a even bigger hole after a bad shot. It's all about damage limitation and getting back in play especially in a strokeplay event. In a stableford event we should all be using our strokes if we have to get out of trouble.

Do we?

I know I don't do it as much as I should. We watch the pro's recovering from bad drives and think I can do that. It's very often the opposite as we hit the ball further into the shit then we have no option but to take a penalty shot or even worse having to pick up and blobbing or entering a NR on the card.

Sound familiar to all ?

In Scott's case it's about getting some points to avoid that approaching Donkey 4 ball.

Though Mr Kennedy has stated that he has no chance of getting in that game anyway so it's not a problem.
