SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIP

By all accounts a good time was had by all (apart from Big Neil ) yesterday at Glasgow Gailes. The weather certainly doesn't get much better for links golf.

The scores by most were very good and Steven Gibson took this years Summer Championship with a solid 37 points. Steven has dropped his handicap by a few shots this season and is obviously in good form. Will he keep it going through the winter and challenge for the main prize?

In second place was a player who has been struggling most of the season with the Lamb Shanks and is yet to play to his handicap in a medal. Smarty finished with a very good 37 points but lost to Gibby on countback.

In third place was the Winter Champion Ian Fox with 36 points. Soon will be time for Ian to start defending his title.

Last years Summer Champion Mick Drummond found himself slipping from the top to nearly collecting the Spoon. A late rally over the last few holes saved his bacon.

In 4th place was the new slimline Geraldo Cullen our King Spooner. Gerry has not only lost 4 stone in weight but has over the summer played lot of golf and got his game going again.

Just behind Geraldo was Davy Graham who I am told had the round of his life at Sponsors day at LGC on Friday. He had 5 birdies and shot 72 helping his team win the event overall. Well done Davy not bad for a joiner.

With our Florida trip coming along at the end of September there are certainly a few players starting to hit some good form. Smarty, Davy and Geraldo all shooting well yesterday. I need to get the sticks back out or it could be 9 wee Spoons for me.

Nearest the pins were Simon Jessney and Neil Keir.

Neil also won the SPOON with 23 points for the first time. Then Spoon was treated to a nice drive up the road in his new Bentley. Very nice Neil.

The Spoon won't want to leave you if it keeps getting a drive in that machine.

INVITATION FROM MICK

I'M THE
BIRTHDAY
BOY

This Saturday night Mick Drummond is having a 30th (Aye right ! ) birthday party at the Giffnock North Social Club. He has asked me to invite any Hacker/partner along for a night out and join him in his celebrations.

Mick has been away on holiday for the last 3 weeks and is sorry for the short notice. He hasn't told me a time but I am guessing 7-7.30pm.

Have a good night Mick and at the next Hackers match as well as a handicap certificate bring along your birth certificate !

30th ma arse !!

LATEST MATCHPLAY RESULTS

JOHN AND SIMON AND INTO THE SEMI FINAL

John Wynn beat Brian Murphy 3-2 at Lenzie last weekend but John said it was a lot tighter than the score shows.

Simon Jessney beat Billy Gibson 3-2 also at Carnwarth and even tho Billy had 3 birdies it wasn't enough to beat Simon.

Billy lost 3 balls and that cancelled out his birdie holes but he said Simon was just to good for him on the night.

So well done to both and they are into the semi.

The draw for the semi finals will be on the 31st of July or before  if all ties are completed early.

GLASGOW GAILES

GLASGOW GAILES
THE 17TH OFF THE
BLACK TEES
(not recommended for us Hackers)

I was down at Gailes yesterday walking around with Craig who was out for a practice round for the weekends Tennent Cup. It is in fantastic condition from tee to green and you are all in for a treat. The rough is knee deep and fairways very very tight as they have grown the rough in- bring loads of balls !!!.

The above picture is the very tight 17th a par 4 measuring 403yds off the black tees. You can see the whites 50yards in front on the LHS  and the Hackers yellow tees some 90 yards ahead on the RHS. Also you can see the rough and just how deep and tight it is from this photo.

Measuring some 6903yds off the blacks it's a tough course. The yellows are are 6300yds and that will be the tees used for our Summer match.

I won't be playing this year as I am up in Nairn that weekend with Craig for the Scottish Northern Championship but I'm sure you will all have a good time.

GERALDO'S BUNKER

THE NOW FAMOUS
"GERRY BUNKER"
WHERE IT
TOOK
14 BLOWS
TO ESCAPE FROM

This is the 4th green on the Keir Course where Geraldo took 14 swipes to escape from in last weeks medal. He walked off the green with a 18.

Driving home on Sunday we had his wee brother Jim on the phone telling us he had a 13 in Saturday's medal also on one hole.

The Cullen boys between them took 31 shots in 2 holes !!!!

They are ripping up the course but not with good golf scores.

They are now on the most wanted list at Cawder for vandalism . The green staff  were seen refilling the  bunker yesterday morning.

On a more congratulatory note to Gerry well done big guy on the weight loss. Gerry has went from 18st 2 down to 14st 12 since the end of February. The dieting has worked wonders for his health but done fuck all for his golf.

Well done Geraldo.

Along with Sinky who has lost a 1stone from cutting out the 4 Mars bars a day and starting his new exercise regime I found my car floating up the road at the weekend to St Michaels.

Congratulations to Ian on his win this year.

He has been the most steady player in the Tour this year and thoroughly deserves his win. With none of the Elite 4 Ball improving the totals yesterday Ian had enough points in the bag to keep our 2 time Tour Champion  Paul James in second place. There was only 2 points separating the top 2 and 8 points off top place we had 3 players on 171.

Ian Baird climbed up the table on Sunday and joined Andrew and Mick in a tie for 3rd place.

Well done to the 26 players who completed the minimum 5 rounds. We had 41 players who played in this years Winter Tour.

The bad weather meant that we only played 8 rounds compared to last years 11. We lost Scotscraig and Ladybank due to the heavy snow.

More photos to follow and the DONKEY OF THE YEAR report.

Winner yesterday was George with 34 points on a course that I expected to see better scores on. The greens were very hard making approach shots and chips hard to stop and the putting surface was very fast and slick also.
The decision to putt out also might have contributed to the lack of points for most.

The deal of £20 was great value for this time of year and it was good to get the Tour finished after all the cancellations from the poor winter.

Dodi was chased to the finish with 5 players all on 33 points and Bairdy the Tours player with the most number of wins getting second place on countback.

In SPOON position we had Paul James. It was unfortunately Paul Jnr and not his father"he who will never win the Spoon "

There were a lot of disappointed faces when they realised it was his son and not Vera.

Maybe one day guys our wishes will come true !

Nearest the pin was Hutchy at the 15th and winning the money for that elevated tee shot.

Still to come

FINAL MATCHPLAY RESULTS

DOWN TO THE
LAST

The last few games have now been played and the last 8 are now into Sundays draw.

On Thursday night Graham Dickie got beat by another Crowwood Bandito Brian Murphy. Brian defeated Graham 2-1 at Lenzie. At least your bandit didn't rodger you like mine did to me. Ma arse is still sore from the pumping Bairdy gave me.

Last night Gordon Sinclair beat Alex Smart 3-2 at Cawder playing the big course. Gordon was 4 up at one stage then Alex got it back to 2 before Gordon closed out the match.

Also last night Mick Drummond gave Simon Jessney the tie as he was unable to get the time to play before tonights cut off.

Players into the last 8.

WOOF WOOF

Course looking good on a nice Spring evening

A DOG LICENCE FOR ME !!

Last night at Cawder Bairdy gave me a good pumping over the first 12 holes in our Hackers Matchplay tie.

I would like to use the excuse that it was only my second full round since early March but I could have played out my skin and he would still have humped me. Maybe not the full doggy but he would have won that's for sure.

After 12 holes he walked of the green just 2 over par - with a 7th at the 9th !!!

Before anyone asks- yes I won the 9th with my 3rd par of the round.

Awesome shooting Show's Ya .

So no excuses from me apart from I was shite.

That is the first time I have been up on the big course since I played Tommy last month and the greens were just fantastic to putt on. Very fast and so true even this early in season and they are only get better if that's possible.

The whole course was looking great so hats off to the staff for getting it in such good shape even with all this cold weather and lack of growth.

All the best Ian in the next round.

Remember all ties to be played by next Saturday.
