450
HOLES OF
GOLF
IN
APRIL
Craig in Peru |
On the 28th of March Craig left us and we didn't see him till the 28th of April as he was off on a succession of golf competitions around Britain and overseas.
First up was a week at Lossiemouth for the Scottish University Championships. He had 72 holes over 2 days in the individual then another 3 days with 36 holes each day in the team championship since Strathclyde made the final.
He then headed straight down to Leven Golf Links the next day to play in the Scottish Champion of Champions opening SGU event for the season. He had got a phone call during the week with the offer of a place in the invitation only event. That was another 72 holes over 2 days meaning he had now played 252 holes of golf in just 8 days.
From Leven he then went straight to St Andrews for The R and A Scholars Championship played on the Old Course and the Eden over 54 holes in 2 days.
After that he had a few days at home (but we were away in Florida at this point).
His next trip took him away down to Wales for the British Uni Championship over 72 holes.
It was then straight up the road and out to Lima in Peru for a International comp that he had been selected for. He was playing in a 2 man team representing the R and A as he's a R and A scholar.
This was a great overseas trip and with it being World Ranking Event it meant points were up for grabs. It was a very good field with countries and universities sending 2 man teams.
Craig eventually finished 5th overall with a score of 3 over for the 72 holes and was happy with how he played. He said it was the tightest course he's ever played and 3 of the players that were ahead of him are currently in the top 100 in the World Rankings ( the boy from Chile that won is now ranked 13th). Craig and his partner Ryan McKinstry from Ireland finished 5th team which is the best the R and A team has ever finished in the 26 years this competition has been going.
In this years Uni season Craig has had 2 top 3 placings in British Order of Merit events along with his 7th place in the Championship. That put him in the top 5 overall in the Order of Merit and after the Final at Wales the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team was announced for the bi annual World University Championship. He was picked in the 4 man team and is off to Switzerland in June for 8-10 days to play in the individual and team competition. The event is played over the same course that the European Tour plays The Omega Masters on.
So a nice trip for him to look forward to later in the season.
I picked him and Ryan up 3 days ago at the airport and in the month since we had last seen him he had played 450 holes of competitive stroke play golf and that doesn't include 1 or 2 practice rounds at each event !!!!
