GREAT GOLFING MOMENTS

Lets have a look at how we are meant to play golf for a change with 3 of the greats.

Below are some videos of 3 great golfing moments.

The first is Tom Watson with his incredible downhill chip from a impossible lie on the 17th at the 1982 US Open at Peeble Beach. He went to win the title. Prior to making the shot he turned and said to his caddy "I am going to hole this".

The next video is Tiger at the Masters in 2005 before he started chasing the different type of birdies. Again a impossible looking shot and having to play it 25 feet above the pin and then let gravity pull it down. A great advert for Nike.

The last video is the longest at just over 10 mins long. Watch the greatest finish in golf history.
Finishing 7 under for the last 10 holes including a bogey - Jack Nicklaus in the 1986 Masters.
At the age of 46 coming from so far behind and sweeping past  Greg Norman and Seve with some incredible golf on the final day. Just fantastic and one of the greatest moments in golf.

Golf only is £20.00

Lets hope the weather is better than it was last weekend.

Montrose is the 5th oldest course in the world. Earlier on in the season we played  Crail - Balcomie Links which is the 8th and then Scotscraig the 13th oldest.

Guest of honour will be Malky and he is looking forward to meeting us all up at his course. Malky was often present at our outings and even went to Florida 3 times before he went to live near his daughter in Montrose.

There is a new rule for this round - as a guest of honour he can't win the Spoon !!

The other reason is that he is nearly 80 years of age so have a heart and let him enjoy his day. The Spoon will be travelling back down the road with someone else who plays like a donkey.

LEADERS AFTER 3 ROUNDS

THE GOOD AND THE BAD
SCORES
SO
FAR

The scores below are each persons best 2 scores from the 3 rounds played. This is a better reflection on how things are going.

TOP 12 PLAYERS

Ian Baird            75
Billy Gibson      72
John Wynn        71
Ian Fox              70
Jim Wylie          69
Graham Dickie  69
Alex Smart        69
Brian Murphy    69
Gordon Sinclair  67
Neil Keir            66
Paul James         66
Simon Jessney   66

Long way to go but a high standard has been set already with Ian averaging 37.5 points per round. The weather has been in great so far and the players who have got some good scores have taken advantage of it. Who knows what lies ahead weather wise. One thing for sure is it won't continue to be like last Sunday.

The top 4 players play in the last 4 ball in our final round at Ladybank on March the 25th.

BOTTOM 4 PLAYERS

Peter Ritchie         48
John Sommerville 51
David Graham      53
Kevin McKinney  53

Two more rounds before the festive break so there is still time to get some points or slip further into the Donkey of the season four ball battle in the final round at Ladybank.

SCOTSCRAIG SPOON WINNER 2011

SPOON BOY 22 POINTS

 KEVIN McKINNEY

SCOTSCRAIG RESULTS

SCOTSCRAIG

20th November

Only 5 weeks until Christmas and some of us were  playing in short sleeves yesterday. What a contrast to the last 2 years when we have been at Scotscraig. Two years ago it was frozen solid and last year it was hard and bitterly cold just before we got frozen in for 7 weeks.

THE CROWWOOD MAFIA CONTINUE TO DOMINATE

Two weeks ago, Ian Baird won at Leven with 40 points and yesterday his brother-in-law, Brian Murphy, shot the same number of points as Ian to win by a clear 2 points. This was excellent shooting and Brian took advantage of the balmy conditions to get a rack of points on his account for this season.

FIRST WINNER OF THE DAY

Scott takes the money off Mick by 2 points
 Alex Smart nearest the pin
 Andrew Alexander nearest the pin
John Wynn in 3rd place
 Jim Wylie in 2nd place
Scotscraig winner Brian Murphy  with 40 points
SCOTSCRAIG SPOON BOY  KEVIN McKINNEY 22 POINTS

In second place was Jim Wylie with 38 points and having 19 points on the back 9 was enough to beat John Wynn on count back. John had 24 points at the turn but could only manage 14 back in.

While we were all out on the course, word was getting around that Steven Gibson only had 2 or 4 points playing the 9th.  Happy days and lots of smiles as someone else was going to be picking up the spoon.

Someone did pick up the Spoon but it wasn't Steven with only 2 points after 7 and having to borrow balls at that point as he had none left in his bag.

Steven certainly had a game of two halves. He had only 2 points after 7 but managed 7 more points on the 8th and 9th to reach the turn with 9 in total. He then proceeded to get 20 points in the 9 remaining holes and shoot away from the danger zone.

Who was in Spoon Territory and the danger zone?

We had 2009 Winter Champion, Davy G, with 25 and Peter Ritchie who has been flirting with disaster the last 2 outings was also on 25. They were just ahead of Del Boy who had 25 points but only 11 on the inward half. This put Derek in pole position and just when he was getting himself ready for his picture with the Spoon in came Kevin McKinney with only 22 points and the winner of the Spoon this week with ease. Congratulations Kevin on winning this award, you now join a long list of illustrious winners and you will have a place at this year's Spoon Table for Christmas Lunch.

Alex Smart and Andrew Alexander won the par 3s with Andrew just 6 inches from the hole. Andrew had 3-2s yesterday also.

A WEE FUNNY FROM FLORIDA

This is a tale from our recent golfing holiday in Florida and is completely true involving  Mr Totten and Mr Nicholson.

A little bit of a explanation about the sleeping arrangements before the tale.

In building 1 we were in unit 4G

In building 2 we were in unit 8B

Tommy and Danny were in 8B and the first morning we all saw the 2 of them go a walk and run along the beach about 7.00am.

We watched them return and shout abuse at us before dissapearing inside the building opposite ours.

An hour later we all met up at the van to go out for breakfast and were told the following.

When entering the lift they were possibly still suffering from their run along the beach or maybe some jet lag but they pressed 4B and got off the lift on level 4.

Walking up to the door of unit 4B they opened the door and walked into the hall and all the way into the lounge only to find a elderly lady sitting in her underware watching breakfast tv.

Yes the bold boys had only been in the complex 10 hours and were in the wrong unit with a elderly lady.

"Thats what I get for leaving my door unlocked " said the elderly owner of 4B

Two sweaty scots standing dripping onto her tiled floor.

DEL VISITS CARPET WISE

PUTTING PRACTICE THE DEL BOY WAY

Well gents this is another "you can't make it up" Hackers story.

After winning the Spoon at Ladybank last March we had Hutchy visiting the doctor and getting sorted out  for a ear infection which was causing him to miss putts.

This week I heard another wee story of another Hacker going to extraordinary lengths to sort out his game.

Derek "Del Boy"Mitchell at this years Sponsors Day won nearest the pin at the 17th only to 3 putt from 6 feet !! His first putt ended up 8 foot past the hole.

It was fully documented in a earlier post and I won't go over old ground. You can still catch up with it in last Augusts postings.

After putting like a donkey and the abuse he got afterwards Del decided to plan a new practice routine to improve his scoring.

What did he do?

He went to Carpet Wise with his putter , 3 balls and a stimpmeter !!

You can picture the conversation with the sales man.

"I need a shaggy pile carpet for slow greens "

"A hard coconut hair for links greens"

"A deep pile carpet for spongy greens"

"A length of linoleum for the very fast slick greens"

"I would like to try them all first before I take them home and also can I test them for speed with my stimpmeter "

"I would like to achieve a speed between 12 and 9 to give me practice on all surfaces."

"I am stopping at the building merchants on the way back home to get a wee drop of sand also to sprinkle over the carpets to give them that true links feel"

Yes gents Hackers go to almost any lengths to improve their game and stay away from Spoon territory.

He was allowed to set up half a dozen cuttings of carpet in the middle of the floor and putt back and forward testing them with his stimpmeter also. After 30 minutes he had a group of half a dozen other zoomers sorry shoppers all trying out his carpets with his balls and putter.

' Aye wait till I get some sand on that lino it will be just like the Auld Course in summer "!!!

So after The Carpet Wise Putting Championship he departed with 4 different grades of carpet for him to practice on.

For the last few months Derek has been putting away happily in his garage with his shaggy bits and sandy bits of carpet trying to sort out his putting woes.

Yes Gents you couldn't make it up - or could you ??

GERALDO'S BEST SHOTS IN FLORIDA !!!!

VINOY RESORT FLORIDA

Standing on the first tee at the above course we heard a loud splash next to us and up flew this eagle with breakfast in it's claws.

Gerry quickly saw a good photograph opportunity and got a great series of pictures.

Quick mention for Gerry and his return to some good golf. On Sunday he shot 63 around Lenzie to win the sweep in the morning circus.

Looking good for Sunday Gerry. Hope you don't have a repeat of last years round at Scotscraig - 16 points setting a record low points total and of course driving back down the road with Oor Spoon.

We have had a early withdrawl from Scotscraig. Stevie "I will never win the spoon " Paul phoned me last night to say he really couldn't take the risk and play as he is still traumatised from last years round there.
Remember the picture of him missing a putt on the 14th with hardly any points on his card. A late rally saved him from taking the spoon but as he missed that putt he had one hand on the spoon and the photo caught the reaction to missing a point again.

The Christmas golf/lunch event now has 34 players and I will list all entered later in the week.

Last year at the lunch we had Spoon Corner this year at the lunch we will a top table with all Spoon Winners. There are 2 rounds to go before the lunch so who will be joining the Spooners ??

Some other rounds were organised today

January 15th  Crail - Craighead Course 32 places available

January  29th  Elie Golf Links   32 places available

I will be taking £5.00 deposits on Sunday for these rounds.

It's still very early in this years tour but already certain individuals are setting a good pace at the front. 2 time spoon winner Bairdy is sitting at the top with a average of 34.5 points per round so far. He is closely followed by his travelling companion Bilbo Gibson on 68 points. A few points behind is one of the low handicap men  of the tour - Ian Fox on 66 points.

Last years overall tour winner The Mexicano is lurking just off the pace and I have no doubt he will be waiting to leap frog past his pals at the top.

Also keeping in contention are some of the fancied players. John Carslaw - 2 ball and 4 ball finalist this year. He  has got off to a reasonable start with 64 points and keeping him company last years runner up Stevie Paul who is never far away from the leader board.
There are 10 players within 7 points of the lead.

It's far to early to see who is going to claim this years title.

Just a reminder to all it's your best 5 rounds from whatever number we manage to play. Should be 9/10 rounds depending on the weather.
